Libyan Desert Glass is nearly pure silica, fused in the Great Sand Sea on the Egyptian border about 29 million years ago.

King Tutankhamen's pectoral holds a carved scarab of this same golden glass, which is the oldest known use of it as jewelry.

Held up to the light it goes from pale straw to deep gold, and pieces often carry sand grains and bubbles trapped when it cooled.

How to read a listing here

  1. 01

    Weight and price.

Every specimen is listed by its exact weight to the hundredth of a gram, so you can compare one piece against another instead of guessing.

  2. 02

    Where it came from.

The locality is on every listing, and for meteorites the classification too. What the photograph shows is the piece that ships.

  3. 03

    What is in the box.

Most pieces ship with a display case and a velvet carrying bag, and every listing says exactly what comes with that piece. Saffordites also come with a macrame necklace and an information sheet.
