This stunning museum-grade Gebel Kamil Iron Meteorite Pendant is a true piece of cosmic history. Measuring approximately 1.25” long by 0.75” wide and weighing 25.19 grams, this natural fragment from outer space is a wearable relic of one of Earth’s lesser-known but significant impact events.
Roughly 5,000 years ago, a massive iron meteorite struck the eastern Sahara Desert in southern Egypt, exploding upon impact and leaving behind the Kamil Crater—a rare, well-preserved crater surrounded by thousands of iron fragments. It wasn’t until February 19, 2009, that this site was rediscovered via satellite imagery and later confirmed by an Italian-Egyptian expedition. Altogether, about 1,600 kilograms (~3,600 pounds) of shrapnel were recovered.
This meteorite is classified as an ungrouped Ni-rich ataxite, meaning it lacks the distinctive Widmanstätten pattern found in most iron meteorites due to its high nickel content. Its ungrouped classification makes it exceptionally rare and scientifically valuable, as it may represent a unique parent body in our solar system.
